Most people still associate the word “punk” with the clichés of the Seventies: English influence, mohawks, boots, self-destruction and transgressive actions. A combination of generic nihilism and avant-garde ambitions, no future and other stereotypes endlessly churned out in films and by many rock critics. But the large community that meets in Bergamo every year for the Punk Rock Raduno is born from another equally, if not more, interesting side of the punk legend of ’77.

From the mid-Nineties, a new wave of punk rock music, massively influenced by the US underground scene, generated an international network of groups, labels and social spaces that would establish itself over the next 20 years. Politically active, committed to self-production, inclusive and happy to recognise itself as a community while maintaining that same friction with society that has always characterised the genre.

As well as bringing multiple concerts and initiatives to the city, the 2019 edition seems determined to offer a clear response to the wave of regression that is sweeping Italy and Europe.

As well as close collaboration with Bergamo Pride, the Punk Rock Raduno 2019 will be showcasing Pansy Division, a Californian band on the scene since 1992 that has embodied the spirit and ideals of queercore better than anyone. Queercore is the cultural and musical movement that transformed punk rock into a tool for upholding the civil and social rights of the queer community. The Avengers, on the scene since 1977, will also be coming over from the US: pioneers of female punk rock fronted by the iconic Penelope Houston, who is also known for her solo career as a folk singer-songwriter.

Among the other names on the line-up are two veterans of the Italian scene: Derozer and Senzabenza, who are celebrating 30 years as a band this year.

And the Punk Rock Raduno is more than music. Wish I’d Taken More Pictures is an exhibition exploring the relationship between Pansy Division and Italy: posters, interviews, flyers and photos taken over the years by Speed Demon, the first queer Italian fanzine. The material has been collected by Compulsive Archive, which unearths and releases underground punk publishing. The Fine Art of D.I.Y is a workshop held in collaboration with IED – Istituto Europea di Design in Milan. Curated by the brand design and printing technique professor Paolo Proserpio, the workshop will focus on do-it-yourself packaging and paper products: how to create and assemble a vinyl sleeve without a computer, using only paper, scissors and glue.

The Punk Rock Raduno embraces sport too: a roller-derby match will be played on Saturday 13 July. Roller derby is a female discipline played on roller skates and the match will see Bergamo’s Crimson Vipers taken on another team of the best players from around Italy.

Sunday evening will see a special show from Fuori dal Coro, a queer polyphonic choir committed to promoting respect for all sexual identities and the right to choose who you love without prejudice.

And if you need to top up your sugar levels at any point, the Pasticcioni will be on hand with their delicious cookies, cupcakes and other treats.

Entrance to all Punk Rock Raduno events is free of charge and the festival is open to everybody, families and children included. After all, aren’t the Ramones just a big family?
